Qualifying Examination

Nachschlagewerke auf einem Tisch

After successfully completing your IP training or if you fulfil all the prerequisites for admission as a patent administrator, you can take the patent attorney examination before the DPMA's examination board for patent attorneys.

The examination consists of a written and an oral component. The written part is divided into four exams. The oral exam takes place in a group setting. If you pass the examination, you have the right to hold the title of "Patentassessorin" or "Patentassessor" and receive a certificate by the DPMA. Now you can start your career in the industry or – after your defence and admission by the Chamber of Patent Attorneys – as member of the patent bar.

Application for admission

To be admitted to the examination, you need to submit a separate written application to the DPMA and indicate a specific examination date. Depending on the type of application, you also need to submit certain documents and adhere to the deadlines. For more details, please refer to our pdf-Datei leaflet regarding the patent attorney training and qualifying examination (in German).

Qualifying examination dates

Currently, the patent attorney qualifying examinations take place three times a year, usually around the following dates:

  • February (written exam) and March/April (oral exam)
  • June (written exam) and July/August (oral exam)
  • October (written exam) and November/December (oral exam)

The special qualifying examination for European patent attorneys according to the Law regulating the Activity of Patent Attorneys of the Member States of the EU in Germany (EuPAG) normally takes place three times a year on the same dates as above, together with the regular patent attorney qualifying examination.
