Overview of the last meetings (not complete):

Autumn meeting 2024

At the end of the 2nd appointment period of the DPMA User Advisory Council (DPMAnutzerbeirat), the President of the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA), Eva Schewior, drew a very positive balance. ‘We discussed important topics - and made good progress on many of them,’ said the DPMA President. ‘Above all, we at the DPMA have gained ground-breaking impetus from this panel on patent quality. The topic will continue to occupy us, because it concerns what we stand for: the quality of our IP rights.’ Schewior paid tribute to the members of the advisory boards for their work over the past four years: ‘We are very grateful to the members of the User Advisory Council for their great commitment and their many outstanding contributions. They have thus considerably strengthened the central importance of the committee as an important advisory body of the DPMA.’ Read more in our press release of 7 November 2024.

Spring meeting 2023

On April 25, 2023, it was time again - after many virtual meetings, the DPMAnutzerbeirat met for its spring meeting in Munich. This time, the DPMA's advisory expert committee focused on the topic of patent quality. The informative keynote speeches were rounded off with varied and constructive contributions to the discussion from different user perspectives. The deliberations on patent quality will be continued at the fall meeting of the DPMAnutzerbeirat.
The meeting also offered plenty of scope for further topics. For example, the DPMA highlighted its extended information mandate under the new Section 26a of the Patent Act to raise awareness even more broadly about the identification, use and enforcement of intellectual property rights. In this context, too, the DPMA continuously exchanges information with the committee on its activities in the field of public relations.
The DPMA would like to thank all the advisory boards for their valuable suggestions and the always forward-looking discussions. The next meeting will take place in November 2023.

Autumn meeting 2020

On 27 October 2020, the fourth meeting of the User Advisory Council at the DPMA (DPMAnutzerbeirat) took place. It was the last meeting of the committee’s first term. Due to the current pandemic situation, the meeting was held in a virtual format for the first time. The topics were presented and discussed in two successive video sessions.

The User Advisory Council addressed, among other topics, current developments concerning patent and utility model procedures during the coronavirus crisis and patent information trends. For example, there is a significant increase in applications concerning life-saving systems and methods and equipment and methods for sterilising objects. Furthermore, the number of applications concerning community face masks and protective gear has increased considerably. In addition to a continuous increase of the digital availability of patent information, AI methods for conducting searches are also booming.

The members of the User Advisory Council were satisfied with the cooperation within the committee. The DPMA, too, wants to continue this form of dialogue with our customers.

In early 2019, the User Advisory Council on Patents/Utility Models was founded as the central advisory body of the DPMA to formulate and discuss user needs and as an instrument of customer dialogue. The next meeting is scheduled for April 2021.

Autumn meeting 2019

On 23 October 2019, the members of the DPMAnutzerbeirat Patente/Gebrauchsmuster met for their second meeting in Munich. During the meeting, which lasted several hours, the members discussed, among other things, current developments in patent proceedings, modifications of search services and application procedures.

The User Advisory Council on Patents/Utility Models was founded at the beginning of 2019 as the central advisory body of the DPMA for the formulation and discussion of user needs and as an instrument of customer dialogue. The next meeting will take place in spring 2020.
