The President of the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, Eva Schewior, has warmly congratulated the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Daren Tang, on his re-election.
“Your leadership has made a significant contribution to strengthening the global IP ecosystem and intensifying international cooperation,” said Schewior in her letter of congratulations to the Director General of
WIPO. The renewed confidence of the global community is “impressive proof of your dedicated and successful work, as well as your clear vision in the field of intellectual property protection and promotion”. For his upcoming term of office, the DPMA President wished him “every success, energy and foresight in tackling the challenges ahead and in the further development of the World Intellectual Property Organisation”. The DPMA would continue to work closely with WIPO during Tang’s second term and remain a reliable partner to the World Organisation.
On 21 April in Geneva, the member states of WIPO elected the Singaporean to a further six-year term. Daren Tang expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him. During his first term, he had worked with Member States to transform IP from a technical and legal matter into a business, economic and financial asset that helps drive innovation and creativity, and serves as a catalyst for jobs, investments, growth and development for all countries, while ensuring that WIPO is a place where Member States can find consensus and win together. He intends to continue this work during his second term.
WIPO has been a specialised agency of the United Nations since 1974. It deals with intellectual property matters and their protection worldwide. Daren Tang is the organisation’s fifth Director General. Tang is a lawyer and was born in Singapore in 1972. Prior to his election as Director General, he headed Singapore’s Intellectual Property Office (IPOS) between 2015 and 2020.
