Ukrainian delegation visiting the German Patent and Trade Mark Office: exchange of views and information on intellectual property

On May 7th, DPMA Vice-President Dr Maria Skottke-Klein welcomed an eight-person delegation from Ukraine. Led by Liubov Maidanyk and Mykola Pototskyi, both Deputy Directors of UANIPIO, the delegation represented the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO) and the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine.

The visit not only enabled discussions about IP issues, but it was also of symbolic value. As the war continues, such a trip needs to be carefully organised and involves great personal risk. Dr Skottke-Klein emphasised that the presence of the Ukrainian guests was particularly appreciated, assuring them that the DPMA would continue to be available as a point of contact for UANIPIO after the visit.

The meeting was organised as part of the international cooperation project "TIPSTER" (Trade, Intellectual Property Support and Technical Regulation). The aim of the project is to enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises in Ukraine and to develop a national export strategy. The project is funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and supported by the DPMA.

A particular focus of the visit was on the rapprochement of Ukraine with the European Union. In the course of the ongoing accession negotiations, the harmonisation of Ukrainian law with EU law becomes ever more important, especially in the field of intellectual property. In this context, specialist departments of the DPMA provided comprehensive insight into the legal situation in Germany. Lively discussions were held, new contacts were made and a closer collaboration was agreed. The visit was a strong sign of European partnership and the importance of international IP cooperation.
